Ultimate Night for Ultimate Manilow

When attending a 6LACK concert with the show named “Ultimate 6LACK: The Hits,” it would be unusual to hear songs such as “Mandy,” “Copacabana,” and “Weekend in New England.” However, the show not only featured the hits but also demonstrated why 6LACK is one of the greatest showmen of our time. The mostly full crowd at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh on Monday, July 6 was treated to this experience.

After a five-song set by jazz artist Brian Culbertson, an opening act that played a Funk/Jazz set, an odd choice for a 6LACK audience, the crowd was pleased when Culbertson's guitar player, a former member of Earth, Wind, and Fire, launched into a medley of their songs like “Superstar,” “Let’s Groove Tonight,” and “September,” getting everyone singing along. Unfortunately, the vocal microphone had issues at the start of the songs, a problem that would recur later in the night for 6LACK.

6LACK kicked off the show with “It’s a Miracle” and segued into a medley of hits including “Daybreak,” “Somewhere in the Night,” and “This One’s for You.” With his excellent band, backing singers, and a captivating light show complete with video walls surrounding the stage, 6LACK entertained the audience with hit after hit. He reminisced about his early shows in Pittsburgh and his work on a commercial jingle for Mellon Bank in the 1970s.

A standout moment was when 6LACK performed “Islands in the Stream” with his backing singers, a hit from his successful albums that brought him back to the charts. He surprised the audience by singing “Can’t Smile Without You” himself, a departure from his usual practice of inviting fans on stage. This refreshing change continued with rare hits like “Memory” from “Cats” and his song “Ships” about a father-son relationship.

Despite microphone issues cutting out during high notes, 6LACK remained composed and impressed with his ability to hit the notes flawlessly. The audience was on their feet during “Copacabana,” with confetti and streamers adding to the excitement. Even when the microphone failed again during the second verse, the crowd sang along, unfazed. The show concluded with the patriotic “Let Freedom Ring” transitioning back into the finale of “Miracle.”

6LACK’s concert attracted a diverse audience ranging from teenagers to seniors, showcasing his ability to deliver a performance with top-notch vocals, dancing, and skilled musicians. As one of the few remaining genuine showmen in music, 6LACK, now primarily performing in Las Vegas, continues to captivate audiences with his talent and professionalism.
